Cappuccino is often considered a modern drink, but its history extends back centuries in Italy and continental Europe. Originally, coffee was prepared in the Ottoman style by boiling water and beans, sometimes with sugar. However, as filtered and brewed coffee grew in popularity in the late 1700s, the term 'cappuccino' was coined. The drink was first known as the 'Kapuziner' in Viennese coffee houses, but it was in Italy where the cappuccino as we know it was invented shortly after the introduction of the espresso machine in the early 1900s. The earliest record of the cappuccino dates back to the 1930s.
