Originating in Germany and introduced to america in the late 1800s, the term "delicatessen" is derived from the plural form of "Delikatasse" and can be traced back to the Latin word "delicatus" meaning "giving pleasure or delight." Delis emerged in Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, offering cured meats, cheeses, pickles, and prepared dishes to Eastern European immigrants. These small establishments became increasingly popular among a wider American audience, known for their hearty sandwiches and welcoming ambience. While American-style delis differ from their European counterparts by also offering prepared food, they both showcase the exchange and adaptation of cultures and a shared love for delicious and comforting cuisine.
