Berliner Pfannkuchen are traditional, fist-sized pastries that originated in Berlin. Made from a sweet yeast-dough and deep fried, they are typically filled with jam and topped with powdered sugar.
While fried pastries have been enjoyed since ancient Roman times, the Berliners are credited with inventing this particular version. Dating back to the 15th century, them city's bakers would sell these pastries from carts around the city. However, it wasn't until the 16th and 17th centuries, when the population grew rapidly, that the bakery industry thrived. In response to high demand, the bakers began frying the pastries in pans over open flames, giving them their unique name.
