There are various theories surrounding the origin of the classic French baguette. One story suggests that Napoleon Bonaparte mandated that bread be made in long, slender shapes to conveniently fit in the pockets of his soldiers. Another popular legend claims that during the construction of the Paris Métro in 1898, workers from different regions of France were brought together and bakers were asked to create a unique bread that could be torn, rather than cut, to avoid disagreements over knives. A final theory suggests that the famous bread was a catalyst for the French Revolution, as it was a staple in the French diet and the lower classes were outraged by the nobility enjoying crusty baguettes while they suffered from shortages and hunger.
